Bandung, Indonesia – October 4, 2025

The Asian College of Exercise and Sports Science (ACESS) and the Universitas Pendidikan Indonesia (UPI) have strengthened their global partnership through the successful hosting of the ACESS–UPI Joint Symposium 2025, themed “Movement as Medicine: Advancing Health and Performance Through Exercise Science.

Held at the UPI Faculty of Medicine in Bandung, the symposium brought together academics, researchers, and practitioners from across Asia to explore how exercise science can improve health, prevent disease, and enhance human performance. The event marked a significant milestone in ACESS’s mission to promote research-informed and impact-driven collaboration across the region.

Forging Stronger International Partnerships

A key highlight of the symposium was the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between ACESS and UPI, along with two Memorandums of Agreement (MoA) between ACESS, the Faculty of Medicine, and the Faculty of Sport and Health Education, separately.

The MoU was signed by Dr. Fabian Lim Chin Leong, President of ACESS, and Prof. Dr. Didi Sukyadi, M.A., Rector of UPI. The MoAs were signed by Dr. Lim, Prof. Dr. Hamidie Ronald Daniel Ray, M.Pd., Ph.D., Dean of the Faculty of Medicine, and Prof. Dr. Komarudin, M.Pd., Dean of the Faculty of Sport and Health Education.

These agreements establish a framework for long-term collaboration through:

  • Exchange of lecturers, researchers, and students.
  • Joint research and publications in exercise and sports science.
  • Organization of international seminars, conferences, and training workshops.
  • Sharing of educational and scientific resources.
  • Co-development of research-based innovations to promote community health.

“Through this partnership, ACESS and UPI are creating new pathways for international collaboration and innovation in sports and exercise science,” said Dr. Fabian Lim, President of ACESS. “Together, we aim to translate scientific research into real-world impact, improving health outcomes across communities in Asia and beyond.”

Driving Scientific Exchange and Innovation

The symposium opened with remarks by Prof. Dr. Agus Setiabudi, M.Si., Vice Rector for Research, Community Service, and Partnerships, representing the UPI Rector.

Two distinguished ACESS keynote speakers delivered cutting-edge insights:

  • Prof. Dr. Ryoichi Nagatomi, Vice President for Scientific Exchange and Forums, spoke on the role of exercise physiology in preventing chronic diseases and enhancing quality of life.
  • Assoc. Prof. Dr. Chaipat Lawsirirat, Vice President for Academic Development, shared evidence-based strategies for improving physical performance and preventing injuries.

The event also featured oral and poster presentations by researchers and students from Indonesia, Japan, Vietnam, and other partner countries, covering topics such as biomechanics, exercise-induced inflammation, student nutrition, and aerobic capacity in young athletes.

To recognize excellence in research, ACESS and UPI jointly presented the Young Investigator/Student Awards, and the ACESS Travelling Fellowship Award to the best oral presenter. This prestigious fellowship embodies ACESS’s mission to exchange scientific knowledge, inspire research, and cultivate professional networks and lifelong friendships across the Asia-Pacific region.

Promoting “Movement as Medicine” and the SDGs

The theme “Movement as Medicine” reflects ACESS’s commitment to integrating physical activity into preventive and therapeutic healthcare. The symposium also aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly:

  • SDG 3 – Good Health and Well-being: Promoting health and disease prevention through exercise science.
  • SDG 4 – Quality Education: Strengthening research, innovation, and international collaboration in sports and medical sciences.

Looking Ahead

The ACESS–UPI Joint Symposium 2025 stands as a powerful testament to the impact of international collaboration in advancing exercise and sports science. By connecting scholars, practitioners, and industry leaders, ACESS continues to champion scientific exchange and promote innovations that contribute to global health, performance, and quality of life.
