Dr Edwin Chong is a Principal Research Scientist at Temasek Laboratories, Nanyang Technological University (NTU), with over 13 years of experience in human performance research, and policy-relevant science. His work focuses on applying physiological and behavioural research to enhance performance, safety, and resilience across occupational, defence, and community settings.
He holds a PhD in Exercise & Health Science from the University of Western Australia and a Master in Public Administration from NTU. Edwin has led and contributed to multidisciplinary research programmes addressing environmental stress, heat acclimatisation, injury mitigation, and performance optimisation, and has secured and managed multi-million-dollar research portfolios.
Previously, Edwin held roles in the Singapore Armed Forces and the National Trades Union Congress, where he led large-scale programmes and policy initiatives in workplace safety and health, worker well-being, and applied human performance. Earlier in his career, he was the Head of Sport Physiology at the Singapore Sport Institute, supporting Team Singapore athletes and para-athletes, including at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games.
Edwin is actively involved in academic and professional service, including research ethics review and participation in international expert working groups on human factors and environmental physiology. His research integrates laboratory, field, and applied methodologies, with an emphasis on translating empirical findings into evidence-informed practice. His current research interests include human performance under thermal stress, and the interface between exercise science, public health, and policy.
